Who we are

Oxbow Partners is a strategy consulting firm specialising in the insurance industry, with offices in London and New York City. We partner with the leadership teams of insurance companies in the UK, Continental Europe and North America to drive transformation across strategy, operations and technology. We also assist investors with M&A.

Our story

Founded in 2015, Oxbow Partners is a specialist strategy consulting firm built to bring a fresh perspective to the global insurance industry. The Financial Times has ranked us among the UK's Leading Management Consultants, and we are one of a small number of consultancies to hold B Corp certification. We combine consulting leadership and deep sector expertise with a commitment to doing business the right way.

Our mission

Our mission is to be the most trusted, best-informed and most entrepreneurial insurance advisory firm, while having fun along the way.

Why insurance?

Insurance sits behind every car on the road and every plane in the sky. Insurers defend and indemnify companies being sued, and secure loan portfolios for banks. Reinsurers help communities recover after natural catastrophes like hurricanes in Florida or earthquakes in Japan.

Insurance is a complex industry, requiring skills that range from marketing to specialised actuarial valuation and huge IT transformations. It is also a very large sector, and relatively unexposed to economic cycles: a good place to build a consulting career.

Our Reach, Capabilities and Culture

Global presence with deep industry focus

Clients engage us when they need a top-tier strategy consulting firm that understands their sector. The insurance industry is global and interconnected, and leadership teams call on our expertise in major financial centres including London, New York City, Zurich, Munich and Bermuda.

A culture shaped by our values

Oxbow Partners was founded to be different: a collaborative team rather than a collective of resources. We are humble and curious, and we learn from one another. We support each other, recognise people's strengths and take shared ownership of improving the firm. Above all, we enjoy working together.

Top-tier consulting capabilities

We hire high-calibre people who have the intellectual capacity and the humility to build consulting skills and expertise quickly. The ability to pull a breakthrough insight out of the analysis is what distinguishes a strong strategy consultant.

Example Engagements

Corporate strategy development

Corporate strategy development

We help senior leaders determine what their organisation’s ambition should be, where they should play and how they can win. Our work generally involves an objective review of current performance, including an assessment of market dynamics, competitors and the organisation’s own strengths and weaknesses. This allows us to present informed strategic options and support an interactive decision-making process, often leading to transformation or M&A.

SEE PROJECT
Specialist strategy development

Specialist strategy development

Sometimes organisations need help with an element of their strategy, or with one specific question. We might help the Chief Underwriting Officer reimagine the underwriting process to use AI, the Chief Operating Officer cut costs, or the Head of Strategy assess an opportunity in France. Whoever we are working for, the work is derived from and connected back to the company strategy.

SEE PROJECT
Operating model design

Operating model design

We help senior leaders design an organisation that delivers their strategy. Our approach starts with strategy, because that is how we understand the ways the business will win in its market. We then identify the differentiating capabilities it needs, and design an operating model, the people, processes and technology, that delivers them.

SEE PROJECT
Transformation

Transformation

Strategy and operating model design is only the start: what matters is transforming the business. We lead Strategic Transformation Offices, which sit alongside the senior leadership team to drive and guide transformation programmes. Our work is a mix of oversight and rolling our sleeves up to push things forward.

SEE PROJECT
Specialist analysis

Specialist analysis

Sometimes clients ask us very specific questions, given our deep sector expertise, broad market view and analytical capabilities. A Chief Financial Officer might want to understand the impact of the market pricing cycle on future performance; a Chief Underwriting Officer might want to review the profitability of their portfolio.

M&A: Due diligence

M&A: Due diligence

Private equity firms are drawn to insurance for its predictability and resilience. We help private equity funds evaluate targets, and provide analysis of the broader market, the target's capability and the feasibility of its business plan. Investors value our sector specialism and our willingness to give an opinion. This is a fast-growing part of our business.

SEE PROJECT
M&A: Post-merger integration

M&A: Post-merger integration

We help companies bring together their strategies and operations after a merger or acquisition. Often this begins with Day 1 planning, where we help the leadership team of the acquiring company map out how to integrate the acquired company's operations. We start with big-picture questions about their approach, then cascade into specific plans for individual functions and teams. We have supported some of the largest and most complex transactions in recent years.
