5-year growth strategy and Operating model engagement

A growth strategy is the executive plan to grow revenue. It involves defining what the top-line target is, identifying where growth can be found, agreeing how it will be won, and understanding what might prevent success. Given an agreed growth strategy, a subsequent operating model review assesses readiness to deliver strategic initiatives, focusing on enablers and supporting capabilities.

5-year growth strategy and Operating model engagement

Overview

Our client is a global (re)insurer. Following the completion of their last five-year strategy, which stabilised returns, they began planning the next five-year window with the goal of supercharging growth while remaining profitable.

Over a four-month engagement, we supported their executive team and cross-functional leadership to understand their current state and market positioning, define the growth ambition and commit to a set of core growth and operating model initiatives.

My role as a consultant evolved throughout the project. I began by analysing their current state and competitive positioning, which involved granular analysis of their underwriting portfolio and an assessment of the winning and losing strategies among their peer set.

My role then shifted to supporting the delivery of executive and cross-functional workshops, suggesting possible growth horizons and exploring strategic questions and trade-offs with the leadership group. Following this, our project team began the operating model review, where my focus was the client's network of global offices. Here I was responsible for interviewing the regional heads of each office, mapping current pain points and assessing readiness to deliver on the growth initiatives.

The result was an executive team aligned on the scale of their growth ambition, and committed to seven strategic growth and operating model imperatives, which have since been approved by the parent company.
