Strategy review for a European reinsurer

A strategy review is a structured process that assesses an organisation's status quo, defines the case for change and ambition, and sets out future options and strategic building blocks. It combines internal perspectives and diagnostics with external market insight to drive decisions about where to compete, how to win, and how to deploy resources and capabilities most effectively to deliver long-term objectives.

Strategy review for a European reinsurer

Overview

The client was a sub-scale reinsurer operating a largely commoditised portfolio with limited differentiation and undeployed capital. Over a six-week period, we conducted a strategy review and refresh to increase strategic relevance to their broader Group and the market, and establish how to deliver its next phase of growth. We worked closely with management and key teams on the ground in Switzerland, with the objective of establishing a clear vision and strategy for the business, supported by the broader group.

My role in this engagement was to steer the overall development of the strategy and facilitate discussions with the leadership team. This involved working closely with senior executives to assess the organisation's current performance and market position, align on a collective ambition and shape and evaluate growth opportunities for the next phase of the business.

Alongside comprehensive analyses of the business, portfolio, competition and market, the project was shaped above all by a series of in-person executive client interviews and workshops in Switzerland. We planned and facilitated these sessions to challenge existing assumptions, explore options and align leadership on key strategic choices.

The work culminated in a board-level strategy document setting out the organisation's strengths, challenges and strategic options for future growth. The leadership team aligned on the ambition and the priority growth areas, and came away with a clearer view of the capability implications, including the future role of AI, and of the roadmap required to deliver the next phase of growth.
