recruitment process

STUDENTS (UK ONLY) - INTERN

Stage 1

Online assessment

A short online test designed to assess core skills necessary for a career in consulting.

Stage 2

Remote screening interview and a short verbal case study

An interview to discuss your motivations, experiences and attributes, while assessing your problem solving and analytical skills through a short verbal case study.

Stage 3

In-person assessment day: competency interview and business case study

You will meet two of our Managers across two interviews. The first will explore your background, motivations, experience and the key competencies we look for in our consultants, including a short case study. The second is a business case study, where you will analyse a realistic client scenario and present your recommendations. No technical knowledge is required, although we do recommend practising consulting case studies beforehand.

Stage 4

Final Interview

A final interview with either a Principal or Partner. There is no fixed format, but the discussion is likely to include competency-based questions, a short case study and your interests and motivations.

Tips to ace your interview

1

Competency interview

  • Be ready to walk through your CV in 2-3 minutes, with a clear narrative connecting your choices to a genuine interest in insurance and consulting
  • Prepare specific, well-structured examples (situation, action, result) for common competency themes: leadership, teamwork, problem-solving under pressure, and handling ambiguity
  • Research Oxbow Partners specifically: our insurance focus, recent thought leadership and what differentiates us. Rather than ‘why consulting’ answers, we are listening for ‘why insurance, why Oxbow Partners’
2

The case study

  • Structure before you solve. Take a moment to frame the problem, lay out a clear approach, and check it with your interviewer before diving into the analysis
  • Show your thinking out loud, we are assessing how you reason, not just whether you land on the 'right' answer
  • Use numbers with judgement. Sanity-check your maths, round sensibly and always translate the output back into a business implication
  • Ground your analysis in what actually drives value for an insurer: pricing, risk, distribution, capital, rather than abstract frameworks
3

The case presentation

  • Lead with the answer. Structure your presentation around a clear recommendation, then walk through the supporting logic. Do not save the punchline for the end
  • Keep it simple and visual. One key message per slide; avoid overloading with detail
  • Anticipate challenge. Be ready to defend your assumptions and adapt your recommendation if pushed - we are testing composure and flexibility as much as content
  • Practise the delivery, not just the content. Confidence and clarity of communication matter as much as analytical rigour
